How to get driver’s license in QLD
QLD has a Graduated Licensing Scheme that involves three licensing stages and takes a minimum of two years to complete.
From age 16 you are eligible to commence the process by attempting a 30-question, multiple-choice Written Road Rules Test that assesses road safety and low-risk driving. Passing provides a learner licence valid for 3 years.
People under 25 must hold this license for at least 12 months and record 100 supervised driving hours. People over 25 must also hold thelicence for 12 months but do not have to reach a supervised hours target.
When eligible, learner drivers must pass a Q-SAFE practical driving test to ensure they can drive independently. Passing provides a either a provisional P1 or P2 licence depending on your age when sitting the test.
The required holding period also varies based on your age. If you progress to a provisional P1 licence, you must attempt the Hazard Perception Test before progressing.
Passing this test provides a provisional P2 licence or open licence depending on your age. If you progress to a provisional P2 licence, you will be awarded an open licence after a set period (depending on your age), so long as you have a good driving record.
An open licence is valid for up to 5 years. For more information on each licensing stage and resources to helpyou pass each test – visit qlddrivingtest.com.
